2027 Election Shake-Up: Atiku Eyes Southwest Choice for Running Mate

Fresh political alignments are taking shape ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, following an opposition summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where key stakeholders met to deliberate on coalition strategies.

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) announced plans to present a single presidential candidate, in a move aimed at strengthening the opposition’s chances. 

The decision was conveyed in a communiqué presented by Tanimu Turaki, who noted that the coalition effort is focused on building a united front ahead of the polls.

Sources within the opposition parties, however, indicated that discussions are already tilting towards a possible ticket involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who are being considered as key contenders to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

The Ibadan summit also had the backing of notable figures including David Mark, while other aspirants such as Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Obi have publicly declared interest in contesting for the ADC presidential ticket. 

While coalition talks appear to be gaining momentum, insiders caution that negotiations are ongoing and no final decision has been reached, with multiple interests still being balanced as opposition leaders work toward a consensus.
