2027 Elections: Mounting Pressure on Jonathan to Abandon Presidential Bid

2027 Presidency: Jonathan Faces Growing Pressure to Step Down from Race

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is facing growing pressure to abandon any plan of contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Key political figures from the Niger Delta are reportedly urging him to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid instead.

According to insider disclosures, the push is being led by ex-militant leader Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.

He, alongside a small delegation of top leaders from the Niger Delta region, visited Jonathan at his residence in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, on October 16.

The meeting, POLITICS NIGERIA reports, was strictly political. Discussions were centred on persuading the former president to drop any thought of returning to Aso Rock.

Sources say Tompolo made it clear that the sentiment across the Niger Delta does not strongly favour Jonathan running again.

Tompolo, who currently champions the PBAT Door-2-Door campaign structure, was also said to have warned that Jonathan may struggle to secure the level of home support he once enjoyed if he decides to run against Tinubu in 2027.

Another source present at the meeting revealed that Jonathan listened carefully to the appeal and promised to weigh the advice before taking a final position.

However, while speaking briefly to newsmen, he stated that Tompolo’s visit was mainly to “review the prevailing peace in the Niger Delta,” leaving his political intentions still wrapped in speculation.

However, there are growing speculations of Former President Jonathan running in the 2027 presidential election. Recall that he had earlier been linked to political consultations and meetings believed to be connected to a possible comeback bid.
