30 Nigerian Soldiers in Trouble Over Alleged Coup Attempt

Investigations into the alleged coup attempt by some Nigerian soldiers have reached an advanced stage, with over 30 suspects, including senior military officers, expected to face trial soon, Premium Times has reported.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, the accused soldiers and their civilian collaborators will be tried in both civil courts and military court martials.

The suspects are accused of plotting a violent takeover of government, during which several top officials were allegedly marked for assassination.

A source who spoke with Premium Times disclosed that a special investigative panel set up to probe the incident has completed a preliminary report, which is expected to be submitted to President Bola Tinubu.

“The report indicates that more than 30 suspects may face trial, while about seven others remain at large. Those found not to have a case to answer are expected to be released,” the source said.

Investigators said that seven individuals linked to the alleged coup have yet to be located, as their homes were found empty and their phone numbers have remained unreachable.

The source said, “The seven people could not be found in their homes, and their telephone numbers have been dead since this matter started. So they are still on a manhunt.”
Sylva Denies Involvement After Military Raid

Uncertainty remains over whether Timipre Sylva, former Bayelsa State governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, is among those on the wanted list.

Sylva had recently confirmed that his Abuja residence was raided by soldiers, though he denied any involvement in an attempted coup.

In a statement by his media aide, Julius Bokoru, the former minister said the raid caused significant damage to his property.

Bokuru said, “During the said operation, considerable damage was inflicted upon the property.

“Despite sustained efforts, I have been unable to ascertain the reasons or authorisation for this raid. To the best of my knowledge, the officers involved did not provide any categorical explanation for their actions, either at the time or subsequently.”

Bokoru also confirmed that Sylva was not in Nigeria during the operation and did not specify when he would return.
