The Northern Youth Coalition, Taraba State chapter, has alleged that the proposed tax reform bill introduced by the government of President Bola Tinubu is deliberately designed to promote the south at the expense of the north.
Youths from the northern region, lamenting the economic hardship in the country, said that the impact of these policies is more severe in their region.
In addition to the tax reform bill, the group also condemned the closure of the country’s borders by the federal government, alleging that this policy is more beneficial to the south than the north.
This was contained in a statement signed by the group’s chairman, Comrade Idris Ayuba, on Saturday in Jalingo.
The statement said that most of the problems facing the north are the result of government policies, citing the removal of fuel subsidies, closure of borders and the new tax law.
Ayuba explained that the border closure has created an unequal distribution of economic opportunities, with the southern region of Nigeria enjoying greater access to ports and international trade routes.
The group criticized the new tax reforms, especially the revenue sharing mechanism, saying it would disproportionately affect the northern region.
According to the group, northern Nigeria is grappling with major development challenges, including poverty, infrastructure gaps, and poor access to education and health. The reduction in revenue sharing will exacerbate these problems.
The group warned that the reforms would widen the economic gap between the north and the south.
