BREAKING: Grid failures national embarrassment, says APC chieftain

A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, Mr. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called for an in-depth investigation into the recurring collapses of Nigeria’s national grid, describing the situation as a “national embarrassment” that must be urgently addressed.

In a statement issued in Osogbo on Sunday, Oyintiloye expressed concern over the grid’s collapse 12 times since January, emphasising the devastating effects of erratic power supply on businesses dependent on stable electricity.

“This persistent collapse of the national grid within a single year is an embarrassment that requires thorough investigation,” Oyintiloye stated.

“The recent incident, which occurred last week, further highlights the need for President Bola Tinubu to probe the underlying causes of these frequent failures.”

The former state lawmaker noted that the country possesses ample resources to maintain a stable grid and questioned why collapses continued unabated.

“The country is blessed with all the resources needed to keep the grid running. Why then does it collapse so frequently?

“It’s a national embarrassment that must be thoroughly investigated. If acts of sabotage are involved, a comprehensive probe will uncover them,” he added.

Oyintiloye stressed the importance of restoring stability in the power sector to safeguard the economy and urged that anyone found sabotaging the government’s efforts to ensure reliable electricity supply should face appropriate consequences.

As part of proactive measures, he called on the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to ensure that those tasked with maintaining the grid are competent and committed to their responsibilities.

“The embarrassment must stop, and sanity must be brought back to the power sector for the sake of our economy,” Oyintiloye concluded.

The persistent grid failures, according to him, underscore the critical need for structural and systemic reforms within Nigeria’s power sector.
