A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has described the party as currently lacking leadership direction, suggesting it is now “an orphan.”
Sani made the remark on Wednesday while speaking in an interview, where he explained that the PDP’s main challenge is no longer the threat of failing to participate in elections but the urgent need to restore internal structure and unity, noting that the party is presently operating without clear guidance from any faction.
Sani also pointed out that the authority claimed by allies of Nyesom Wike to constitute the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) had been nullified by the courts.
He said the Court of Appeal recently ruled that members of that group were under suspension when they carried out those actions, making their decisions illegitimate.
“The issue we are facing now is not the existential threat of missing elections but trying to put the soul of the party in proper shape and form. As it stands, the party is not being driven by anyone. It is just standing on its own,” Sani said.

He added, “The authority which the Nyesom Wike group claimed, through which they formed their board of trustees and NEC, was quashed because the court affirmed that those people were under suspension at the time and could not have performed any legitimate party function.
“So the party has no alternative but to pursue reconciliation. In my view, this should follow the advice of the Ibadan Court of Appeal, which recommended sitting down, reviewing the lists, making necessary adjustments, and then presenting them for adoption and judgment in a way that is acceptable to both parties.”
