BREAKING: Intercommunal Clash In Southwest Chad Kills 35, Government Confirms

At least 35 people were killed and six others injured during an intercommunal clash in Chad’s southwest province of Logone Occidental, a government spokesperson confirmed on Thursday.

The violence, which broke out on Wednesday in a village in the region, adds to a troubling pattern of deadly disputes in the Central African nation.

The government said the conflict was part of the recurring violence between local farmers and nomadic herders, who are often accused of allowing their livestock to graze on farmland. Such clashes are common in Chad, where competition over land and resources frequently fuels tensions.

In a statement, the Chadian government said security forces were promptly deployed to the scene and managed to bring the situation under control. A delegation has also been dispatched to assess the damage and offer assistance to affected communities.

Despite repeated efforts to quell violence between farming and herding communities, the root causes of these disputes—land scarcity, climate pressures, and weak local governance—continue to drive conflict in the region. Authorities have pledged to investigate the incident and implement measures to avoid further bloodshed.

The tragedy underscores the urgent need for long-term solutions to intercommunal tensions in Chad’s rural areas, where violence remains an all-too-frequent occurrence.
