The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has adjusted the 2027 election timetable and schedule of activities, and extended the deadline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members.
The electoral body said the move is aimed at aligning its electoral timetable with statutory provisions and parties’ internal schedules ahead of the 2027 general election.
The Commission announced the adjustment in a statement issued by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
INEC said the decision followed concerns raised by political parties during a consultative meeting held on March 24, 2026, regarding the earlier submission window of April 1 to April 21, 2026.
According to the Commission, the adjustment ensures compliance with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which mandates that party membership registers must be submitted at least 21 days before the conduct of party primaries.
“Political parties are now at liberty to fix dates for their primaries within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, 2026,” the statement said, stressing the need for strict adherence to the revised timeline to guarantee a seamless electoral process.
INEC further clarified that, based on the new arrangement, the deadline for submission of party membership registers has been extended to May 10, 2026, replacing the earlier cut-off date of April 21.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to working closely with political parties to ensure transparency, compliance with the law, and orderly conduct of activities leading to the 2027 general election.
