The Kano State Government has said it will start prosecuting all tax evaders by 2025 as part of a reform of the tax collection system.
This was announced by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Special Adviser to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in Kaduna, on Saturday.
According to the statement, Dr. Zaid Abubakar, the Chairman, Kano State Revenue Service (KIRS), made this known while briefing the Governor during a seminar for senior government officials.
Dr. Zaid Abubakar explained that the reform is not about increasing taxes, but improving the tax collection system and ensuring compliance with tax regulations.
The statement further stated that Kano State expects to collect over twenty billion Naira in every 3 months of 2025.
The statement stated that to ensure effective reforms in tax collection, the Governor will launch a new tax collection system, a system that is expected to improve revenue collection efforts by 2025, which will help implement campaign promises in various areas of development in the state.
