According to the Republican senator from Texas, some Nigerian officials have created an environment that enables jihadist violence by enforcing blasphemy and Sharia laws while allegedly failing to act against attacks carried out by extremist groups.
United States Senator Ted Cruz has accused Nigerian government officials of creating and sustaining policies that facilitate mass violence against Christians and other religious minorities, saying Washington knows those responsible and is pushing to impose sanctions on them.
Cruz made the remarks in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account after the U.S. House of Representatives advanced efforts aimed at addressing religious persecution in Nigeria.

“Nigerian officials have created an environment that facilitates mass violence against Christians and religious minorities by imposing blasphemy and Sharia laws and looking the other way at jihadist atrocities,” Cruz wrote.
The senator further claimed that the United States government already knows the Nigerian officials responsible for the policies and said he had been advocating legislation to sanction them.
“The U.S. government knows the Nigerian officials responsible for these policies, I have been pushing my bill to sanction them, and President Trump has even ordered military action,” he stated.
Cruz also accused Nigerian authorities of attempting to counter growing international criticism through a public relations campaign rather than addressing concerns over insecurity and religious persecution.
“Instead of responding to American concerns, Nigerian officials waged a public relations campaign against critics,” he wrote.
According to him, Nigerian officials believed they would be able to maintain the status quo, but recent action by the U.S. House of Representatives demonstrated otherwise.
“They were confident in that campaign and in their ability to continue the status quo, and I am heartened that the House has just definitively proven them wrong,” Cruz added.
Cruz’s latest comments come amid renewed scrutiny by U.S. lawmakers over the Nigerian government’s response to persistent attacks on Christian communities and other religious minorities.
On Wednesday, during a congressional session on religious freedom in Nigeria, U.S. Representative Chris Smith accused extremist groups, including Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and Fulani militants, of targeting Christians and urged the Nigerian government to take stronger action to curb the violence.
Also speaking during the session, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, said the administration was taking allegations of Christian persecution in Nigeria “very seriously.” He acknowledged improvements in Nigeria’s cooperation with the United States on counterterrorism but argued that the country still had “more work to do” regarding the application of Sharia law in parts of northern Nigeria.
Waltz also alleged that churches were being burned, pastors executed and people arrested simply for wearing crosses, adding that the U.S. administration would continue to press Nigeria on issues relating to religious freedom and the protection of vulnerable communities.
