The sudden death of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has raised questions about how someone who seemed healthy in public just weeks earlier could later be diagnosed with advanced cancer.
Hassan, 66, died on Sunday, 23 August 2026, after battling cancer. His family only publicly confirmed his condition days before his passing, sparking widespread discussion about the rapid decline in his health.
Nigerian doctor and health educator Aproko Doctor addressed the issue in a series of posts on X. He stressed that looking well outwardly does not always mean everything is fine inside the body. Some serious illnesses, including certain cancers, can develop quietly and produce symptoms that initially resemble more common, less serious problems.
He specifically tackled the frequent tendency to attribute recurring stomach issues to ulcer. An ulcer does not simply transform into cancer, he clarified. However, some cancers—particularly those of the stomach—can cause symptoms that people commonly describe as ulcer-related.
As a result, individuals may continue treating what they believe is an ulcer while the real underlying cause goes undetected.Aproko Doctor advised people with ongoing stomach problems not to rely indefinitely on previously prescribed ulcer medication.
Persistent symptoms should instead prompt thorough medical investigation to identify the true cause.Warning signs that warrant professional evaluation include persistent stomach pain, unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, or feeling full unusually quickly.
These do not automatically indicate cancer, he noted, but they are reasons to consult a healthcare professional rather than dismiss them.At the same time, he urged against unnecessary panic: most cases of stomach pain are not cancer.
