The Enugu State Government has allocated N10 billion for the renovation of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.

Mr Ekweremmadu stated that Governor Peter Mbah is committed to advancing sports in the state, particularly at the grassroots level.

“The Enugu State government has earmarked N10 billion for the refurbishment of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, as outlined in the 2025 budget.

“In addition, N3 billion has been allocated for the Awgu Games Village, and N200 million will be designated for upgrading the facilities at the Enugu Sports Council secretariat on Nkpokiti Road, Independence Layout,” he noted.

Mr Ekweremmadu also revealed plans to construct an Olympic-sized swimming pool within the stadium and to rehabilitate the Indoor Hall, aiming to enhance the state’s ability to host the 26th edition of the National Sports Festival in 2026.

“This year, the ministry will focus on preparations for hosting the 2025 Coal-City International Marathon.

“We are currently in discussions with a reputable consultant who will partner with the state to organise the marathon,” Ekweremmadu added.

He indicated that international athletes from around the globe would be participating in the event.

Furthermore, Ekweremmadu highlighted the achievements in the sports sector for 2024, deeming them commendable.

“The ministry accomplished a great deal in 2024, having hosted several sporting events, including the 1st National Council on Sports Summit.

“Rangers International Football Club also triumphed in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League season.

“We successfully hosted the first Mixed Martial Arts Caged fight, where Nigerian fighters competed alongside international fighters from Cameroon, Senegal, Kenya, and Congo.

“The state also organised the South-East Boxing Championship and the National Under-15 NPFL Youth Football Competition, as well as the Coal-City Half Marathon, among others.

Mr Ekweremmadu further reported that the ministry exceeded its 2023 revenue target in 2024 by 300 per cent, generating N20 million in revenue, only four million naira short of the 2024 target of N24 million.

The commissioner praised the staff for their commitment and dedication, urging them to strive even harder in 2025.
