BREAKING: FCT Employers given deadline for tax return filing

The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has urged all private companies, Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and other employers in the FCT to submit their employee annual tax returns for 2024 before the January 31, 2025, deadline.

This reminder aims to ensure compliance with the Personal Income Tax Act 2011 (as amended) and the PAYE Regulations, which require employers to file annual returns detailing all employee emoluments and taxes deducted during the previous year.

A statement issued by Mustapha Sumaila, Head of Corporate Communications at FCT-IRS, warned that failure to meet the deadline could lead to penalties and sanctions.

The Acting Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Michael Ango, stressed the importance of timely filing during a recent stakeholder engagement for 2025.

“The filing of employee annual returns is mandatory. Non-compliance will result in penalties, and the FCT-IRS will enforce sanctions against defaulters,” Ango explained.

He also underscored the importance of voluntary compliance, urging employers to fulfil their obligations promptly to avoid sanctions.

“The best form of compliance is voluntary. We expect all taxpayers in the FCT to comply willingly,” he added.

Ango further urged private organisations, MDAs, government-owned enterprises, and sole proprietorships to meet their tax responsibilities, not just to avoid penalties but to contribute to the development of the FCT and support the efforts of the Honourable Minister of the FCT, His Excellency Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, in transforming the city into a modern metropolis.

The necessary forms for filing are available, and employers are encouraged to submit their returns using the prescribed documents before the January 31 deadline.
