BREAKING: IG Orders training, weekly lectures to enhance police professionalism

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, held a virtual meeting on Monday with strategic managers from the Nigeria Police Force, including Commissioners of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, tactical commanders, and the Force Management Team.

During the session, the IGP commended officers for their contributions in reducing crime throughout 2024, urging them to intensify anti-crime efforts in 2025 for a further reduction in crime rates.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP highlighted the importance of professionalism in police operations. He stressed the need for enhanced specialised training for Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers to improve the thoroughness and efficiency of investigations, particularly for complex and high-profile cases.

To reinforce professional standards within the force, the IGP announced the immediate implementation of reorientation courses for all police personnel. The courses will cover topics such as human rights, community policing, ethical conduct, and the proportional use of force. These courses aim to bolster the police’s commitment to serving the public with integrity and respect.

Furthermore, the IGP introduced weekly lectures at all levels of the Force, including divisional, area commands, and state levels. These lectures will focus on continuous professional development, ensuring officers are well-versed in legal frameworks, best practices, and advancements in law enforcement technology.

“The lectures will also encourage interactive discussions and knowledge sharing among officers, fostering a culture of ongoing learning and improvement within the Force,” the statement noted.

Egbetokun also emphasised the importance of accountability, urging supervisors to ensure their subordinates uphold professional standards, and warned that supervisors would be held accountable for any misconduct.

The IGP reiterated his commitment to building a more effective and accountable police force that enjoys the trust and confidence of the Nigerian public.
