BREAKING: Manchester United striker closing in on January transfer window exit

Man United recalled Joe Hugill from his loan with Wigan with a view to loaning him to another club for the remainder of the season.

Carlisle United are close to signing Manchester United youngster Joe Hugill on loan.

Hugill spent the first half the season on loan with Wigan Athletic but he was recalled from that spell and Carlisle are in talks to bring him to Brunton Park for the remainder of the campaign.

Although Hugill started in the first six league games of Wigan’s season, his minutes were gradually reduced and his involvement in the final few weeks of the loan became sporadic.

United decided to recall Hugill with a view to loaning him to another club for the second half of 2024/25, and Carlisle should offer him a chance to continue his development.

Hugill will drop down a division to League Two if he signs for Carlisle, who are managed by former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson. Carlisle are fighting to maintain their football league status after a difficult campaign and have made several signings in the January transfer window.

The first academy departure of the window was Ethan Ennis, who signed for Doncaster Rovers, and United have been locked in talks with clubs who can offer youngsters more minutes.

The Manchester Evening News revealed Ennis was set to move to Doncaster and have also confirmed loan offers for Dan Gore and Harry Amass are being considered.

United signed Hugill from Sunderland’s academy in 2020 and he was part of the FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2022, alongside Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Gore.

Hugill spent time on loan with Burton Albion last season and is set to leave on his third loan.
