Niger Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has banned heavy-duty trucks from plying one way through Dikko Bridge, following a devastating petrol tanker explosion that claimed multiple lives around Dikko junction in Gurara local government area.
The Governor, who visited the scene of the explosion, condemned the recklessness of some drivers and directed that vehicles coming from Maje axis should instead follow under the bridge and take a U-turn.
He instructed the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps to establish a detachment in the area to ensure enforcement of the directive.
Governor Bago described the tanker explosion as “pathetic” and thanked God that it didn’t affect nearby communities.
He also urged the Federal Government to expedite the completion of the Minna-Suleja road, citing the delay as a contributing factor to the continuous loss of lives.
The Governor expressed gratitude to agencies that participated in evacuating victims and announced that doctors from Minna Hospitals will be redeployed to assist in treating injured victims at Suleja General Hospital.
