BREAKING: Jeff Bezos-backed Perplexity AI tables $50bn proposal to merge with TikTok U.S

Perplexity AI, a conversational search engine that uses large language models backed by tech billionaire Jeff Bezos, has offered a $50 billion proposal to merge with TikTok U.S.

This latest development aims to combine Perplexity’s state-of-the-art AI search capabilities with TikTok’s large user base to address US security concerns.

The proposed deal, which is estimated to be worth over $50 billion, would improve Perplexity’s video capabilities while preserving ByteDance investors’ interests.

Elon Musk’s X is reportedly a serious candidate for a deal, particularly in light of talks to extend TikTok’s deadline for completing a U.S. agreement.

In a related development, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday demanding a 75-day postponement in the implementation of the TikTok ban.

The Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which was signed into law by former President Joe Biden in April and passed with widespread bipartisan support in Congress, is prohibited from being enforced by the US Justice Department.

“The unfortunate timing of section 2(a) of the Act — one day before I took office as the 47th President of the United States — interferes with my ability to assess the national security and foreign policy implications of the Act’s prohibitions before they take effect,” Trump’s executive action said.
