Barely 48 hours after a petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area claimed 98 lives and left 68 others injured, another tanker has overturned in Bida Local Government Area of Niger State.
The fallen tanker, which was transporting groundnut oil, attracted residents who were seen collecting the dripping oil despite warnings.
Witnesses reported that the risky behaviour is similar to the actions leading to the tragic Dikko explosion.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed that 86 victims of the Dikko explosion were given a mass burial, while the injured are receiving treatment at various hospitals.
Officials blamed the loss of lives in Dikko on residents who attempted to scoop fuel, triggering the deadly fire.
NSEMA’s Director-General assured the public that efforts are underway to manage the situation and prevent further loss of lives.
