Supporters of the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, gathered in large numbers at the Speaker’s Lodge on Joel Ogunnaike Street, GRA Ikeja, on Saturday morning, eagerly awaiting his return.
The supporters, clad in pro-Obasa attire, including vests and caps, are lining up outside the residence, preparing for what they have described as a “heroic welcome” for the former speaker.
Obasa, who was recently ousted by a majority vote in the Assembly, was replaced by Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker.
Since the impeachment, Meranda has presided over two sittings in Obasa’s absence.
Notably, Obasa was out of the country when the impeachment occurred.
There is growing debate over the use of the Speaker’s Lodge at 47 Joel Ogunnaike Street, as Obasa is no longer entitled to the residence following his removal.
One resident expressed surprise, stating, “I didn’t expect that the lodge would be opened for them.”
The Punch correspondent, who is on the ground, reports that armed security personnel, including police officers, have been deployed to the area to maintain order and prevent any disturbances.
As of the time of reporting, Obasa has not been seen at the location.
