Following a confrontation between Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye over the rightful National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), security agencies have taken control of the party secretariat.
The security personnel consisted of soldiers, police officers, and members of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The trouble began when Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye arrived to attend the Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting. Shortly after entering a closed-door session, an aide to Samuel Anyanwu forcibly ejected Ude-Okoye from the meeting.
This incident sparked a heated altercation between the two factions until security operatives intervened.
The National Secretary position has been a contentious issue since Anyanwu departed to contest the governorship in Imo, which he ultimately lost. In his absence, the South East Caucus of the party endorsed Ude-Okoye as his replacement.
After losing the position, Anyanwu’s attempts to reclaim his seat as secretary plunged the party into further turmoil.
On December 20, 2024, an Appeal Court sitting in Enugu upheld a previous High Court ruling that removed Senator Anyanwu as PDP National Secretary, confirming Ude-Okoye’s legitimacy in the role.
Despite this, Anyanwu has filed for a Stay of Execution and Appeal, with Dr. Musa (SAN) appointed by Damagum as the party’s legal counsel, which has further complicated the situation.
