A father in Pakistan has killed his teenage daughter after she uploaded videos on TikTok that he deemed inappropriate, police reported on Thursday.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, had recently relocated his family from the U.S. to settle in Quetta, a city in southwestern Pakistan, according to local police chief Babar Baloch.
Now in custody, the father confessed to shooting his daughter earlier this week after she refused to dress more modestly and stop posting what the family considered “indecent” content on TikTok, Baloch stated.
Police are treating the incident as a case of honour killing.
Approximately 1,000 women are killed each year in Pakistan by close relatives—fathers, brothers, and sons—under the guise of preserving family honour, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).
In many instances, the perpetrators evade punishment due to a controversial Islamic legal clause that allows relatives of the victim to forgive the offender, as noted by the rights organisation Amnesty International.
Although Pakistan enacted a law in 2016 to partially eliminate this controversial clause, it has not been sufficient to eradicate the practice, according to the HRCP.
