The Conference of Patriots within the Peoples Democratic Party (CP-PDP) has condemned recent remarks by Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, describing his reported support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election as a “betrayal” and “ideological somersault.”
Okowa, a former governor of Delta State and the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, was quoted as suggesting that Tinubu should be allowed to complete an eight-year tenure — a position the CP-PDP decries as shocking and unpatriotic.
In a statement issued by its Protem National Coordinator, Barrister Obinna Nwachukwu, the CP-PDP said Okowa’s stance is “completely out of sync with the mood of millions of Nigerians who are desperate to vote out Tinubu in 2027 and bring an end to the agony, insecurity, and economic hardship ravaging the country.”
“This statement from a leader of Senator Okowa’s status is nothing short of an ideological betrayal,” the CP-PDP said.
“It disregards the trust of over nine million Nigerians who rallied behind him in 2023 to resist the continuation of APC misrule, only to be met with this volte-face in their time of deepest suffering,” the group added.
The group expressed dismay that a figure who once vigorously campaigned against Tinubu and warned of the dangers of APC leadership is now calling for its extension.
“Is Senator Okowa now endorsing the elongation of poverty, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and mass misery that have become hallmarks of the Tinubu administration?” the statement queried.
The CP-PDP reaffirmed its stance that President Tinubu’s government has failed Nigerians, and warned that any attempt to normalize or extend that failure through re-election campaigns would be forcefully rejected by the Nigerian electorate.
The statement declared: “We have no doubt that the APC and all its apologists will suffer a disgraceful, wholesale defeat in 2027. “
There are competent, patriotic Nigerians across all six geopolitical zones who can steer the nation out of this crisis.”
The CP-PDP cautioned Senator Okowa that Nigerians “will not accept his suggestion to remain in bondage,” urging him to reconsider his position and realign with the aspirations of the suffering masses.
