BREAKING: Popular Nigerian University Bans Early Morning Lecture

Popular Nigerian University which is identified as Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has officially prohibited lecturers from holding classes at 6:00 a.m and 7:00 p.m, responding to student complaints about irregular academic schedules affecting their well-being.

The university management reaffirmed that official lecture hours remain between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., warning lecturers against violations, including scheduling classes during Lecture Free Week.

In a statement signed by the university registrar, K. A. Bakare, the Vice-Chancellor stressed the importance of maintaining a structured schedule that supports both students and staff.

The decision follows pressure from the Great Ife Students’ Union, which condemned the increasing trend of early-morning and late-night lectures, Saturday classes, and violations of Lecture Free Week.

The union argued that these practices disrupt students’ academic balance and personal well-being.

“It is disheartening to see these abnormalities becoming the norm,” the union stated, urging the administration to take immediate action.

Students have been encouraged to report any violations through their class representatives, with the union warning that failure to enforce the new directive could lead to further action.

“We remain steadfast in advocating for policies that prioritise student welfare and academic success. If normalcy is not restored, we will take decisive action,” the statement read.

The university has yet to announce specific penalties for lecturers who defy the directive.
