BREAKING: Northern Youths back Defence Minister, condemn Amaechi’s ‘inflammatory rhetoric

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has expressed its full support for the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, following his recent warning against the use of inflammatory rhetoric, especially when aimed at prominent figures such as Rotimi Amaechi.

In a statement issued on Sunday, AYCF President General Yerima Shettima acknowledged the current political climate, where tensions are running high and divisive rhetoric is becoming increasingly prevalent.

The AYCF commended Minister Matawalle for his stance, asserting that his actions are in the best interest of the nation.

“While healthy political discourse and opposition are essential for a thriving democracy, deliberate incitement to violence crosses an unacceptable line.

“The comments attributed to Rotimi Amaechi, which are perceived to incite violence or unrest, pose a serious threat to national security.

“Such actions undermine the democratic process, sow discord among citizens, and could lead to catastrophic consequences, including loss of life and property. The Nigerian government, in its duty to protect its citizens, must not tolerate any deliberate attempts to incite chaos, irrespective of the political standing of those involved.

“The law must be applied equally to all.”

The statement went on to praise Minister Matawalle’s bold stance, highlighting that his decision to publicly address the issue and call out individuals who may be inciting violence was both necessary and courageous. The AYCF argued that the Minister’s actions demonstrate a commitment to maintaining peace and upholding justice.

“The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum unequivocally supports Minister Matawalle’s call for calm and his firm stance against political incitement. We believe his actions are not only necessary, but also crucial for safeguarding the peace and stability of Nigeria,” the statement continued.

The forum emphasised that the government must demonstrate its commitment to upholding the rule of law by addressing any instance of incitement to violence, regardless of the political affiliation of the perpetrator.
