BREAKING: Senate appoints chairmen for regional development commissions

The Nigerian Senate made changes to its committee leadership following the approval of new regional development commissions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio presided over the session after a two-week break.

As part of the reshuffle, Senator Babangida Hussaini and Senator Muntari Dandutse will lead the Senate Committee on the North West Development Commission. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Senator Kenneth Eze will oversee the South East Development Commission, while Senator Titus Zam and Senator Isa Jibrin will head the North Central Development Commission.

Other committee leadership changes include Senator Abdul Ningi moving from the Population Committee to the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) Committee.

Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan now chairs the Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, while Senator Garba Maidoki has been assigned to the Sports Development Committee. Senator Joel Thomas will now head the Local Content Committee, and Senator Victor Umeh has been reassigned to the National Population and NIMC Committee.

During the session, the Senate also paid tribute to former Deputy Majority Whip Hon. Oriyomi Onanuga, who passed away on January 15.

Lawmakers observed a minute of silence in her honour before adjourning the plenary.
