BREAKING: NANS threatens to shutdown FRSC commands over vehicle impoundment order

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the recent directive from the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, ordering officers to arrest and impound vehicles belonging to NANS structures.

In a statement, signed by the Clerk of the Senate, NANS National Headquarters, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, the students’ body expressed its grave concern over the pronouncement, which it described as an affront to the well-established NANS structures.

According to the statement, “NANS operates at various levels, including national, zonal, and Joint Campus Council (JCC), with allied student bodies such as the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), National Association of University Students (NAUS), and National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Students (NANCES), among others.

“Over time, NANS has maintained a cooperative relationship with the FRSC at both state and national levels, aimed at promoting the safety and welfare of Nigerian students.

“The NANS leadership further argued that the impoundment order threatens their mobility, which is crucial for executing their duties, including attending advocacy programs and other vital student-related activities.”

The association has vowed to resist any attempt to implement the directive by staging a massive protest to defend their rights, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated.

NANS also called on the FRSC leadership to adopt proper communication channels when addressing any issues related to its vehicles, advising that any misconduct involving NANS vehicles should be communicated to the National Secretariat of NANS for resolution rather than making unilateral decisions.

The student body urged the FRSC to engage in a constructive dialogue with NANS to address the issue amicably, to avoid unnecessary tensions and confrontations between both parties.

NANS reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian students and fostering responsible leadership in its interactions with government agencies.
