BREAKING: Jigawa, REA partner for 1000MW solar project to electrify 100 villages

Jigawa State has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Rural Electrification Agency to establish a 1000MW solar power project.

This step towards clean energy is expected to transform the state’s energy landscape and make it a leader in renewable energy.

A statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Dutse, the state capital, by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Hamisu Gumel, quoted Governor Umar Namadi, who signed the agreement at a roundtable meeting in Abuja, as expressing his enthusiasm for the project.

“Jigawa State is open for business. We have the sun, the policies, and the commitment to make clean energy work for everyone,” he said.

According to the statement, the 1000MW Jigawa Solar PV Power Project, to be located in Gwiwa, is a crucial part of the state’s plan to provide reliable power to homes and businesses, adding that upon completion, it will electrify 100 towns and villages, making it one of the largest solar projects in Nigeria.

Namadi stated that the project is not just about generating power but about improving lives.

“With steady electricity, businesses will thrive, and new job opportunities will emerge.

“The REA has been instrumental in promoting renewable energy projects across Nigeria. “This partnership with Jigawa State is a testament to the agency’s commitment to increasing energy access and promoting sustainable development,” Namadi revealed.

He added that the project will also involve training workers and attracting private investors, which will further boost the state’s economy.

“This project is expected to have a transformative impact on Jigawa State’s energy sector and beyond. As the state continues to invest in renewable energy, it is likely to become a model for other states to follow”, he added.

On his part, the REA Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, said that the project is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The 1000MW Jigawa Solar PV Power Project is a shining example of the federal government’s vision for a sustainable future,” he emphasised.

The MD explained that the signing of the MoU between REA and Jigawa State Government marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Jigawa State’s energy journey.
