Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah of Enugu State has been praised for enacting a bill that establishes a comprehensive solution for tax collection and administration in the state.
Architect Chibuikem Onyekachi, Managing Director of Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd, shared his views during a media chat with reporters on Saturday, emphasising the significance of the governor’s new law for the state and its inhabitants.
JOURNALIST101 recalls that on February 4, 2025, Governor Mbah signed into law a bill creating a one-stop shop for tax collection and administration, effectively eliminating the challenge of multiple taxation.
Named the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (Establishment and Consolidation of Revenue Administration) Law, 2025, this legislation grants autonomy to the revenue collection agency, removing bureaucratic hurdles.
In his remarks, Arch. Onyekachi hailed the legislation as a transformative move that will enhance the business environment and drive economic growth in Enugu State.
“This is an admirable initiative by Governor Mbah. By consolidating our state’s revenue collection into a single autonomous body, the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service, we have not only dismantled the burden of multiple taxation but also cultivated a more favourable climate for businesses to flourish.”
He underscored the law’s role in improving the Ease of Doing Business within the state. “For years, business owners, market vendors, and investors have faced the complexities and frustrations of interacting with numerous tax collectors. This new law dispels that confusion, bringing transparency and simplicity—essential elements for attracting new investments,” he stated.
Architect Onyekachi noted that an independent revenue service will enhance efficiency and accountability. “With the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service operating autonomously, they can establish realistic targets and function with the professionalism of a private enterprise. This independence is crucial for maximising our internal revenue generation without imposing additional tax burdens on citizens.”
He urged the people of Enugu State to celebrate and support this progressive initiative by the governor, asserting that it will ultimately benefit them in the near future. “We should take pride in this achievement. It’s a bold step that demonstrates the administration’s commitment to creating a business-friendly climate. With streamlined tax collection, we can anticipate an increase in the state’s internally generated revenue, leading to more resources for development projects that support everyone.”
Onyekachi also expressed confidence that the law would encourage other states in Nigeria to follow suit. “Governor Mbah’s leadership in this regard sets a groundbreaking example. It’s a model that other states can emulate, striking a balance between government revenue needs and the realities of business operations. Enugu is truly leading the way.”
