In a bid to ensure a seamless and incident-free Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, the Lagos State Government has announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion, effective Saturday, February 15, 2025.
The marathon, scheduled to commence at 5:00 am and conclude by 1:00 pm, will witness the convergence of thousands of runners and spectators, necessitating the closure of key roads to ensure safety and security.
According to the State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi on Tuesday, the marathon will kick off at the National Stadium in Surulere and traverse a predetermined route, passing through notable landmarks such as the Third Mainland Bridge, Dolphin Road, and Eko Atlantic.
The government has designated alternative routes, which will be manned by traffic management officials from LASTMA, NPF, FRSC, LSNC, and LAWMA.
Osiyemi explained that the road closure and traffic diversion were imperative to prevent unauthorized access to the race corridor and ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
He reassured residents that traffic management officials would be deployed to minimize disruptions and urged the public to plan their trips accordingly by using alternative routes and other transportation options.
The commissioner stated, “We must ensure that the marathon is conducted in a safe and secure environment. The partial and total road closures are part of our traffic management plans to achieve this objective.”
He appealed for patience and understanding from motorists and residents, emphasizing that the temporary inconvenience would ultimately give way to a successful and memorable event.
Motorists have been advised to navigate the following alternative routes to avoid the closed roads: From Ikeja, use Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue, connect to Eko Bridge, and proceed via Outer Marina.
From Badagry/Mile 2, pass through Apapa via Orile, link Eko Bridge, and continue through Outer Marina.
