Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has launched a full-scale investigation into an incident involving a lecturer and a student after the matter gained widespread attention on social media.
The university administration confirmed that Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies, and Goddy Mbakwe Precious, a third-year student in the Department of History and International Studies, were involved in the incident.
According to a press release issued by the university’s Office of the Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday, the university noted that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph I. Ikechebelu, has directed that a thorough, transparent, and unbiased investigation be conducted to determine the facts surrounding the case.
The statement read, “The incident, which has gained significant attention on social media, is being taken very seriously by the university authorities.
“In line with our core values of discipline, self-reliance, and excellence, and in adherence to the principles of fair hearing, equity, and justice, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu, has ordered a full-scale, transparent, and unbiased investigation into the matter.”
The university reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, self-reliance, excellence, and the principles of fairness, equity, and justice. The management urged all concerned parties and the public to remain calm as it diligently pursues the truth, assuring that appropriate actions and sanctions will follow based on the investigation’s outcome.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University further emphasised its status as an institution that upholds high moral and ethical standards, stating that there is no room for indiscipline, misconduct, or any form of unacceptable behavior within its community.
It said in the statement, “We urge all concerned parties and members of the public to remain calm as we diligently pursue the truth. The university is committed to upholding discipline and decorum, and we will ensure that appropriate actions and sanctions are taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
