BREAKING: Again, Nigeria bids to contest election into IMO Category C

Nigeria has officially launched its bid to contest for a seat in Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, ahead of the 34th IMO Assembly scheduled for November-December 2025 in London.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, during an interactive session with print media editors in Lagos.

According to the Minister, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s candidature, and the IMO has been duly notified. “We have begun preparatory processes, and our goal is to strengthen Nigeria’s position in global maritime governance,” Oyetola said.

This bid is part of the country’s renewed efforts to leverage its vast maritime resources and enhance its influence in international maritime decision-making.

During the session, Oyetola highlighted key achievements in Nigeria’s maritime sector, including port modernisation projects, inland waterways development, and improvements in maritime security. He emphasised that the country’s commitment to securing its waters has led to a sustained zero-piracy record in the Gulf of Guinea over the past three years.

The Minister also announced ongoing efforts to establish a national fleet, promote the blue economy, and enhance port efficiency through digitalisation.

“Our engagement in global maritime affairs must be backed by solid industry reforms and investment,” he remarked.

Oyetola also provided an update on the long-awaited disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF), designed to support indigenous shipping operators in acquiring vessels.

He assured stakeholders that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has finalised the disbursement framework, ensuring transparency and accountability.

“The process is in its final stages, and we are working with development banks to facilitate smooth implementation,” he said, adding that the fund will help strengthen Nigeria’s shipping industry and increase local participation in maritime trade.

As Nigeria positions itself for the IMO Council election, stakeholders are optimistic that these reforms and initiatives will strengthen the country’s bid and solidify its standing as a leading maritime nation in Africa.
