BREAKING: Gov Fubara urges partnership with new GOC to tackle crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism

The Rivers State Governor, Sir  Siminalayi Fubara, has called for a strategic partnership between the state government and the newly appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army to tackle crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other maritime crimes in the state.

Governor Fubara stressed that as the economic powerhouse of Nigeria, Rivers State places a significant burden on those responsible for protecting critical national infrastructure. He urged a collaborative approach to addressing security challenges to ensure the nation functions effectively.

The governor made these remarks while receiving the GOC 6 Division, Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force, South-South, Operation Delta Safe, Major-General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday.

Governor Fubara highlighted the crucial role of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, which is tasked with safeguarding national assets within its jurisdiction. However, he noted that such efforts would be futile without ensuring peace in the state.

“I am pleased that you are here to fulfil this important formality. It is a necessary step in fostering cooperation, but let me be clear-it does not imply any special relationship. It is simply the right thing to do, and I say this so that others may understand as well,” the governor stated.

He expressed disappointment that the outgoing GOC had not once visited the state government to establish a working relationship. “The former Chief of Army Staff visited us during his assignment in Rivers, but, regrettably, the outgone GOC never came, not even to offer assurances of collaboration. This is important because we must work together-we need you to succeed, and you need us to succeed. We would never ask you to act unprofessionally, but it is vital to establish mutual understanding and cooperation,” he said.

Governor Fubara acknowledged the importance of the courtesy visit, assuring the GOC of the state government’s support within its capacity to ensure his success in his new role. He also commended the officers accompanying Major-General Emekah for their dedication to tackling security challenges in troubled communities and fostering peace across the state.

He further noted the increasing complexities of security threats posed by individuals engaged in criminal activities. “Our task has become increasingly complicated due to those who have chosen to be a problem to this country. We are dealing with pipeline vandalism, destruction of gas and crude oil facilities, and, worse still, instigators of communal conflicts in oil-producing areas,” Governor Fubara remarked.

He urged the new GOC to engage with the state government whenever necessary, particularly in addressing chieftaincy and community-related disputes, which fall within the jurisdiction of the state government. “When it comes to issues of traditional leadership and community relations, it is our responsibility. Let us work together to maintain peace in these areas so that oil and gas operations can run smoothly,” he added.

In response, Major-General Emekah stated that his visit was part of his official duties following his appointment as the General Officer Commanding 6 Division. He explained that there had been a recent change of leadership within the Nigerian Army, which resulted in his reassignment to 6 Division, taking over from his predecessor, who has been posted to Abuja.

Having assumed office on 24 January 2025, Major-General Emekah said he deemed it necessary to introduce himself formally to the governor and reaffirm the army’s commitment to working closely with the state government to enhance security in Rivers.
