The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Kayode Egbetokun, has called on newly promoted senior officers to uphold ethical conduct and professionalism in their service to the nation.
He made the statement during the decoration ceremony of the officers on Thursday in Abuja.
At the event, three Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and 16 Commissioners of Police (CPs) were formally decorated. Egbetokun emphasised that the ceremony highlighted the police leadership’s commitment to personnel welfare and career progression.
“You are expected to lead with professionalism and ethical values because your decisions will shape the future of our policing efforts and impact countless lives. The challenges before us are vast, ranging from crime trends to community relations, making your leadership crucial at this moment,” he said.
He encouraged the officers to embrace innovation and collaboration both within the force and with community partners to ensure a safer environment for all. He further stressed that the promotion process was based on merit, requiring the officers to demonstrate higher levels of responsibility and leadership in their new roles.
“Promotion is not just about rank elevation; it comes with greater responsibility, service, and leadership expectations,” Egbetokun stated. He urged the officers to uphold justice and be a source of hope to all citizens.
He reiterated that the promotion process is designed to motivate officers, fostering a culture of professionalism and dedication within the police force.
“Our merit-based promotion system ensures that excellence is recognised and encourages others to strive for distinction,” he added.
Egbetokun also reminded the officers of the need to uphold the rule of law and maintain transparency, integrity, and accountability in their service to the country.
