The Kogi State SDP Gubernatorial Candidate, Alhaji Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, has strongly condemned what he describes as “legislative autocracy and rascality” by Senate President Godswill Akpabio in his handling of Senator Natasha Akpoti during a recent Senate plenary session.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 20, Ajaka criticized Akpabio’s leadership style, accusing him of displaying undemocratic tendencies that undermine the integrity of the Senate.
He described the widely circulated video of the incident as embarrassing, reinforcing the perception that the Senate under Akpabio’s leadership lacks independence and respect for constitutional principles.
“Nigerians yearn for a Senate that is accountable and responsive to their needs. When elected representatives are denied their right to speak for their constituents through acts of tyranny and insensitivity, it poses a serious threat to democracy,” Ajaka warned.
He further stated that Akpabio, given his vast political experience as a former Governor, Minister, and now Senate President, should possess the leadership skills to foster cooperation among lawmakers, regardless of their gender, background, or political affiliation.
“It is disappointing that he chooses to constantly bully Senator Natasha, and this must stop,” Ajaka added.
He called on the Senate to take immediate action by replacing Akpabio with a more competent and inclusive leader, warning that the future of Nigeria’s democracy is at stake if the Senate fails to uphold justice, fairness, and respect for all members.
Ajaka concluded by urging the Senate to shift its focus toward improving citizens’ welfare rather than engaging in conflicts that erode democratic values.
