The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called for the immediate suspension of the Local Government elections in Osun State scheduled for SATURDAY, February 22.
The police in a statement on Friday night, cited serious security threats.
Intelligence reports revealed that certain groups, including political actors, are mobilizing to cause unrest, disrupt public order, and create instability if the elections proceed.
Following an assessment of the security situation, the NPF has warned that going ahead with the elections could lead to widespread violence, endangering lives and property.
While security agencies are prepared to take action if necessary, the police believe suspending the elections is the best way to prevent clashes and maintain peace.
Beyond security concerns, legal issues also surround the elections.
The Attorney-General of the Federation has clarified that a Court of Appeal ruling on February 10, 2025, has overturned an earlier Federal High Court decision. This means the elections, as currently planned, may not have a strong legal foundation.
Considering both security and legal factors, the NPF has urged the Osun State Government to halt the elections without delay.
The police have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining law and order, protecting citizens, and ensuring that the democratic process is upheld.
Political parties and stakeholders are advised to act with restraint and prioritize public safety.
