The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged victorious in the Osun State local government elections, winning all 30 chairmanship seats and all councillorship positions across the state.
This was confirmed by the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), Hashim Abioye, during a press conference on Saturday in Osogbo, the state capital.
The local government election, which took place amid concerns from the opposition, saw PDP dominate across all polling units, reaffirming its stronghold in the state. The ruling party’s clean sweep, however, was not unexpected, given the political landscape and recent developments in Osun.
In the lead-up to the election, opposition parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), had raised concerns about the credibility and fairness of the process. The APC, which governed Osun until 2022, had boycotted the election, calling it a “sham” and accusing the state government of manipulating the process to favor PDP candidates.
Despite the controversy, OSIEC proceeded with the election, emphasizing that due process was followed in organizing the polls.
