The Kwara State Government has invested over N4.6 billion as counterpart funding for the construction of 209.77 kilometers of rural roads across the 16 local government areas.
The State Coordinator of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), Dr. Isaac Kolo disclosed this at the 47th Kwara NUJ Media Engagement in Ilorin, themed “Ending Rural/Urban Migration Through Quality Road Infrastructure.”
According to Dr. Kolo, the first phase of the project will cover 66.5 kilometers of roads in Asa, Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Oyun, and Edu local government areas. Additionally, 39.6 kilometers of roads will be constructed in Baruten, a border community with the Republic of Benin.
He further revealed that agro-logistics hubs would be established to upgrade market infrastructure across the three senatorial districts, ensuring that rural farmers can easily access markets and sell their produce.
“The construction of these rural roads is expected to be completed next year. Once completed, they will not only open up rural communities but also help tackle migration, reduce crime, and boost economic activities,” Dr. Kolo stated.
He urged residents to take ownership of the infrastructure and report any issues to the government for prompt action.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council, Comrade Ahmed Abdullateef, emphasised the role of the media in keeping the public informed about government policies and ensuring accountability.
“The theme of this media parliament is timely, given the widespread road dilapidation across the country. It is crucial that the media continues to play its role in advocacy and public enlightenment,” Abdullateef said.
The state government’s investment in rural roads is expected to enhance agricultural productivity and ease transportation, ultimately improving the livelihoods of rural dwellers.
