The ongoing leadership tussle in the Lagos State House of Assembly appears to be nearing resolution following the intervention of top figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
There are indications that both impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and current Speaker Mojisola Meranda may step aside for a new lawmaker to assume leadership.
Sources revealed that party stalwarts, including former governors Bisi Akande (Osun), Segun Osoba (Ogun), and Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), were mandated by President Bola Tinubu to broker peace after the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) failed to reach a solution.
Genesis of the Crisis
The conflict erupted on January 13, 2025, when 36 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa, replacing him with Meranda, who was then the deputy speaker. Allegations against Obasa included mismanagement, abuse of office, high-handedness, and neglect of legislative duties.
Obasa, who was in the United States at the time, rejected his impeachment, arguing that due process was not followed. “I strongly believe I am still the speaker until the right thing is done,” he insisted.
Mediators Propose Fresh Leadership
On Sunday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, GAC members, and APC leaders met in Marina to find a lasting solution. A party insider revealed that seven lawmakers from Lagos West, the state’s largest senatorial district, were being considered for the speakership.
One of the frontrunners is David Setonji, representing Badagry Constituency II. A seasoned legislator since 2015, Setonji currently serves as the House Chief Whip and is seen as a strong contender based on his experience.
Legal and Political Resolutions in Sight
Sources also disclosed that part of the agreement may require Obasa to withdraw the lawsuit challenging his impeachment. “Meranda will step down, Obasa will step down, and a new speaker will emerge from Lagos West,” an APC insider stated.
The Chairman of GAC, Chief Tajudeen Olusi, confirmed that mediation efforts were ongoing, stating, “At the appropriate time, we shall disclose the final resolution.”
With negotiations at an advanced stage, party leaders are optimistic that a final agreement will be reached in the coming days, restoring stability to the Lagos Assembly.
