BREAKING: Obasa set for return as Lagos Assembly Speaker as police withdraw Meranda’s security details

Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is on the verge of reclaiming his position.

According to Daily Trust, his security details have been reinstated, while those of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who replaced him, have been withdrawn.

Meranda, Obasa’s former deputy, made history as the first female Speaker of the House after his impeachment. However, despite not officially resigning from the role, her tenure appears to have been cut short following high-level intervention by key leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Over the weekend, top APC figures, including former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, ex-Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and some lawmakers, convened to resolve the ongoing crisis in the Assembly.

During the meeting, sources revealed that the decision was made for Meranda to step down, paving the way for Obasa’s return.

“In truth, what they said was that Obasa’s removal was illegal, and the lawmakers were directed at the meeting to go and return him,” a source familiar with the discussions disclosed.

While the exact date for the House to reconvene and implement the leadership changes remains uncertain, Meranda had previously adjourned plenary indefinitely two weeks ago after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the Assembly, causing unrest.
