Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly on 13 January 2025, is poised for a return.
According to Daily Trust, Obasa’s security detail has been reinstated, while Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda’s security has been withdrawn.
Meranda, who served as Obasa’s deputy prior to his impeachment, was unanimously elected to succeed him, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the state’s history.
Although she has not officially resigned as Speaker, her fate was reportedly determined over the weekend during discussions among key leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis within the Assembly.
Those in attendance included former APC National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and several lawmakers. During this meeting, Meranda was instructed to vacate her seat.
There are indications that Obasa may regain his role as Speaker following the leaders’ resolutions, which prominently favoured his return.
“In truth, what was conveyed was that Obasa’s removal was illegal, and the lawmakers were directed at the meeting to reinstate him,” said sources familiar with the situation.
It remains unclear when the House will reconvene to implement the anticipated changes.
Two weeks ago, Meranda adjourned plenary indefinitely due to turmoil in the Assembly caused by an incursion of operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS).
