Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has launched a bicycle loan scheme for junior staff as part of efforts to alleviate the impact of rising transportation costs caused by fuel price hikes and economic hardship.
The university announced the initiative in a statement published on its official website on Thursday, highlighting its commitment to staff welfare through sustainable solutions.
“In a bid to ease transportation challenges for junior staff, the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, distributed the second batch of bicycles under the university’s welfare initiative,” the statement read.
During the distribution ceremony, Professor Abbas, along with the Chairman of the Bicycle Loan Committee, Professor Mahmoud Sani, and other committee members, reaffirmed the university’s dedication to supporting staff mobility. He emphasized that the initiative aims to provide an affordable and reliable mode of transport to enhance efficiency at work.
Acknowledging the success of the first batch, Professor Abbas commended beneficiaries for honoring their loan repayments. He also announced that deductions for the newly distributed bicycles would begin after the Sallah festival, allowing staff to focus on expenses related to Ramadhan and Eid celebrations.
Staff members welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely in light of soaring transportation costs. Many expressed gratitude to the university management and pledged to make good use of the bicycles.
A total of 47 bicycles were distributed in this phase, following the distribution of 100 bicycles in the first phase of the programme.
