BREAKING: NIWA inaugurates special marshals to boost waterways safety

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has launched a specialised Water Marshal unit to enhance security measures and ensure comprehensive safety for all users of the country’s waterways.

In addition to this, the agency has donated a brand-new boat ambulance to the Gbajibo riverine communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

Community leaders and stakeholders welcomed the initiative, commending the federal government for taking decisive action to improve safety on the waterways.

The donation fulfils a promise made by NIWA to the affected communities as part of broader efforts to mitigate the frequent occurrence of boat accidents in the state and beyond.

It will be recalled that last year, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIWA, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, visited the communities in the aftermath of a tragic boat accident that claimed several lives.

Speaking at the unveiling of the boat ambulance on Saturday, NIWA’s Managing Director and CEO, Bola Oyebamiji, described the initiative as part of the agency’s ongoing commitment to improving safety standards on the country’s inland waterways.

According to him, the provision of the boat ambulance aligns with NIWA’s transport safety policies and will significantly help reduce water transport-related tragedies in the state.

Represented by NIWA’s General Manager of Business Development, Olawale Adetola, Oyebamiji reaffirmed the authority’s determination to eliminate accidents on Nigeria’s waterways.

He explained that increasing surveillance on the waterways was a priority for NIWA, which led to the introduction of the Water Marshals and the procurement of the boat ambulance.

“We urge the community to take ownership of this ambulance and not regard it as mere government property. It is meant to serve them.

“They must ensure that the facility remains intact and prevent any form of theft or damage. Proper maintenance is essential to keep it in optimal working condition at all times, so it serves its intended purpose,” he stated.

In his remarks, NIWA’s General Manager for Port and Environmental Services, Agbashi Fidelis, described the initiative as a clear demonstration of the agency’s commitment to safety.

“NIWA has a mandate to ensure that all activities on the waterways are conducted safely and efficiently, for the benefit of everyone.

“Through various initiatives, the authority has been able to implement strategies aimed at improving safety. With the introduction of this facility, NIWA has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding every life. This is a significant step towards ensuring safer waterways,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the community leaders and stakeholders, Abdullahi Gbajibo expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting its importance in saving lives.

“This initiative means a great deal to us. It will help protect the lives of people in our community. When the NIWA MD visited, he provided us with life jackets, but there are still not enough. We need additional support so that everyone travelling by water can be properly equipped,” he said.
