Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, has dismissed claims circulating on social media that he was arrested by United States military personnel in Nigeria, describing the reports as false and misleading.
The cleric reacted after a viral image surfaced online on Thursday, February 5, allegedly showing him being apprehended by US troops at an airport in Nigeria.
The image, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, was accompanied by claims that the incident was part of an international counterterrorism operation involving foreign forces operating in Nigeria.
Some posts further alleged that Gumi was intercepted while attempting to flee the country to Turkey amid suspicions linking him to terrorist groups and their operational camps.
Speaking to SaharaReporters on Thursday via telephone, Gumi categorically denied the claims, questioning the logic behind the narrative.
“The US Army cannot arrest me in Nigeria. Why will the US Army come and arrest me in Nigeria, for what reason?” he asked.
Gumi also faulted the authenticity of the viral image, insisting that it was not real but artificially created.
“The image is Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated. Even a layman will know that the image is AI,” he said, stressing that the visuals were fabricated and should not be taken seriously.
He concluded by reaffirming his status, saying, “I have not been arrested.”
Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, has remained a controversial public figure due to his past engagements with armed groups and comments that many Nigerians view as sympathetic to bandits.
In 2021, he came under intense national scrutiny after holding meetings with leaders of bandit groups in parts of Kaduna, Zamfara, and other north-west states as part of efforts to negotiate the release of abducted victims.
