In a significant political realignment, a former Director General of Finance to the late Hon. Ekene Abubakar Adams, Mr Alexander Adanu has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) along with 10,000 supporters in Kaduna State.
Hon. Ekene, who represented the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, passed away last year, leaving a vacant seat that is set to be filled in the forthcoming by-election.
Welcoming the defectors in Kaduna on Saturday, ADC State Chairman, Alhaji Tijjani Mustapha, described their entry into the party as a major boost ahead of the election.
“We are thrilled to receive you all into the ADC family. Your decision to join us demonstrates a shared vision for a better Kaduna State and Nigeria,” Mustapha said.
He emphasized that their presence strengthens the party’s resolve to drive positive democratic change and ensure quality representation for the people of Chikun/Kajuru.
At the event, ADC also presented Alexander Adanu as its candidate for the 2025 by-election. Before his defection, Adanu also served as the Deputy Director General of the Ekene Constituency Office, a position that further solidified his grassroots political influence.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Adanu expressed appreciation to ADC for welcoming them and providing a platform for inclusive leadership.
Adanu said that the decision followed internal crisis and ranchor within the Labour Party both at the state and national level.
“Our move to ADC is driven by the desire to build a Nigeria rooted in accountability, good governance, and fairness,” he stated.
He also thanked the party for nominating him as its candidate for the by-election, assuring supporters of his commitment to policies that prioritize education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
“As we embark on this new journey, our goal remains to build a Nigeria where every citizen has access to opportunities and a better future,” he added.
