The police are on a manhunt for a woman accused of recruiting some alleged internet fraudsters called Yahoo boys to beat a young man of 32 to death in Ekeokwuru, Ohuhu Umuahia North of Abia State.
The woman known as Mrs Chidozie Ogbuleke was accused of carrying out the act on Monday evening.
Speaking to THE WHISTLER on Tuesday, the assistant commander of the Nigerian Forest and Security Service Umuahia Branch, Mr. Emma Onyema explained that “the victim Nwaeze Sunday from Abakaliki in Ebonyi State, but resided at Umukabia in Ohuhu, Umuahia North” was killed over a delayed business transaction.
Onyema said, “According to Nwaeze before he passed on from the severe beating, he went to Mrs. Chidozie’s POS point to make some transactions.*
He quoted the deceased as saying, “I was expecting some money from someone, and was also expected to send the sum of 80 thousand Naira to someone else from the said money.
“But because the person was disturbing me with calls, Mrs Chidozie had to send the 80 thousand Naira to him, while we waited for the initial credit alert.”
He explained that, “While they were waiting for the transaction to reflect on Mrs Chidozie’s POS machine, Nwaeze excused himself to continue the farm work he was doing beside the POS point.
“Few minutes later, Mrs. Chidozie raised an alarm, calling on the young men in her residence popularly known as Yahoo boys” who descended on him.
They started beating Nwaeze and asked him to provide the money that was transacted which had not been reflected.
“I was alerted immediately and rushed down to the place with some of my colleagues but the boys overpowered us as we were not armed.
“The Afugiri police officers were also alerted and immediately arrived at the scene, but were unable to save the boy as he was beaten to death, while the boys and Mrs. Chidozie fled the scene,” Onyema said.
Also Speaking to THE WHISTLER, a police officer who did not want to be quoted confirmed the development saying the police are on the manhunt for the perpetrators.
“Efforts to arrest everyone involved in the act are ongoing,” the policeman said.
Nwaeze’s body has been deposited in a morgue.
