The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi has ordered the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos to ease traffic congestion.
This directive was announced in a statement by the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Engr. (Mrs.) Olukorede Kesha, following severe gridlock around Ozumba Mbadiwe, Falomo, and Osborne on Wednesday.
The bridge had been temporarily closed on April 1 for critical maintenance and rehabilitation, with the closure initially set to last until the end of May 2025.
However, Umahi stated that palliative measures would be implemented to ensure the bridge remains motorable for commuters.
“The ministry hereby expresses regret for the inconvenience caused to the motoring public by the closure and appeals for their understanding and cooperation,” the statement read.
The Federal Ministry of Works further clarified that comprehensive repair works would be carried out at a later date.
