A fire outbreak on a ferry owned by the Lagos State Government caused panic on Thursday morning as passengers scrambled for safety.
The incident, which occurred around 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, involved the LAGFERRY vessel Igbega Eko, which was en route to Victoria Island with 19 passengers on board.
It was gathered that the boat suddenly exploded and burst into flames while en route to Victoria Island.
Many passengers are said to be injured in the fire incident.
But confirming the incident, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) said all passengers and crew were successfully evacuated.
According to the agency, only four passengers sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
LASWA’s emergency response team swiftly mobilized to the scene after receiving a distress call. The agency worked alongside LAGFERRY personnel, boat operators, and other first responders to bring the situation under control and prevent further damage.
The cause of the fire remains unknown as authorities have commenced preliminary investigations.
LASWA assured the public that safety measures are in place and that ferry operations will continue as scheduled.
The agency urged passengers to remain calm and adhere to safety guidelines while commuting via water transport.
“We are currently conducting thorough preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident, collaborating with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive assessment.
“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures throughout the Lagos waterways.
“LASWA assures the public that all safety protocols remain intact and ferry operations are proceeding as scheduled. We encourage all passengers to stay calm and adhere to safety guidelines while enjoying our waterways,” LASWA stated in a statement.
