White smoke has emerged from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, signalling that the College of Cardinals has successfully elected a new pope.
The moment was met with loud cheers and emotional scenes from the thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square, as bells began ringing across the Vatican to mark the occasion.
While the identity of the new pontiff has not yet been revealed, a senior cardinal is expected to soon announce the news with the traditional phrase, Habemus Papam – “We have a Pope” – followed by the new pope’s chosen name.
Crowds surged forward at the sight of the smoke, many jumping for joy, waving flags, and some praying in silence. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience,” said one couple visiting from Greece.
The new pope is expected to appear shortly on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica to greet the faithful.
