A Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) boat carrying 19 passengers caught fire early Thursday morning at the Ipakodo terminal in Ikorodu. The vessel was en route to Victoria Island when the fire broke out around 6am.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated. However, four individuals sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team swiftly mobilised to the scene, working in close coordination with LAGFERRY, other boat operators and first responders to manage the situation effectively,” the agency said in a statement.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, with LASWA emphasising its commitment to strengthening safety measures on the state’s waterways.
This incident comes months after a similar fire outbreak in November 2023 when a commercial boat in Ikorodu caught fire due to an electrical spark during refueling.
