The Lagos State Ministry of Justice has clarified that motorists who refuse to comply with Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) officers on Lagos roads risk arrest and prosecution.
Naija News understands that the statement comes after widespread reports misrepresenting a court ruling in Abuja on the powers of Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO).
The ministry noted that the Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld a Federal High Court ruling which found that VIO officials in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) do not have the legal authority to stop, impound vehicles, or impose fines on drivers.
That ruling, the ministry said, applies only to the FCT and areas without a statutory framework for vehicle inspection.
Lagos, unlike the FCT, has clear laws setting up the VIS and defining the powers of its officers.
The ministry explained that the enforcement procedures of VIS officials on Lagos roads are fully legal and constitutional.
Drivers are therefore expected to cooperate with officers during traffic enforcement to avoid penalties.
The Lagos State Government assured that all traffic enforcement will continue to follow the law while treating motorists with civility and respect.
Any driver who disobeys or assaults a VIS officer while the officer performs official duties will face arrest and prosecution. See more
